Châtel in the Fall: The Mountains at Their Most Natural, Far from the Crowds
The True Face of Châtel
A Season of Calm Restored
If we had to choose a season to reveal Châtel’s true character, it might be fall. The summer crowds have thinned out, the snow hasn’t yet blanketed the peaks, and the mountains reveal themselves, peaceful and resplendent.
It’s the season of renewed tranquility, warm colors, and simple pleasures— exactly the spirit of slow tourism we love to cultivate at Savoya Lodges. It’s a time when the village returns to its natural rhythm, far from the hustle and bustle of peak season, and when you can enjoy the mountains at their most authentic. Let yourself be tempted.
Colors and Silence
A blazing yet peaceful season
In the fall, the Abondance Valley is bathed in shades of gold and copper. The forests change color, the alpine pastures gradually empty of their herds, and a gentle tranquility settles in. Known for its alpine pastures, cows, and cheese, the valley is also worth a visit for its chalets and mountain peaks, which offer exceptional panoramic views stretching from Lake Geneva to the Mont Blanc massif.
Low-angled sunlight, crisp, pure air: everything invites you to slow down. This is the time when the mountains are as much to be admired as they are to be explored, when every viewpoint takes on the feel of a painting. The shorter days and the cool air make you want to make the most of every hour of daylight before returning to the warmth of the chalet.
The Best Time to Walk
Hikes in the fall
This is undoubtedly the best time to lace up your hiking boots. The best time for hiking in the Abondance Valley is from May through October, with fall offering clear trails and stunning colors. For a leisurely stroll, the path along the banks of the Dranse River connects Abondance to Châtel over a distance of about 20 kilometers and is accessible to everyone—families, children, and strollers—whether on foot or by bike.
More experienced hikers will head for the heights: the lakes of Les Plagnes and Tavaneuse—renowned as one of the most beautiful in the Chablais region— can be explored on a lovely day-long loop hike, while Mont Chauffé and the Cornettes de Bise offer breathtaking panoramic views. With ideal temperatures for outdoor activity and fewer crowds, this is a dream season for hiking enthusiasts, from casual strollers to seasoned hikers.
Up Close with Wildlife
Encountering wildlife
Fall is a great time to observe mountain wildlife. The Mont-de-Grange hunting reserve is home to more than 500 chamois and mouflon, and the Pertuis area is even a marmot reintroduction zone. With a little patience and discretion, you might just catch a glimpse of them.
This is also the rutting season and the time for large gatherings before winter— a striking natural spectacle for those who know how to observe in silence. A friendly reminder: Stay on the trails and keep your four-legged companions on a leash to respect this unspoiled natural environment, which is particularly sensitive during this season.
The Taste of the Region
Savoyard local produce in the spotlight
This is the ultimate season for food lovers. The valley lives to the rhythm of the herds’ return and the end of the alpine cheese-making season. Several trails wind through alpine pastures, such as the Essert, where Abondance cheese and goat’s milk tomme are made in the summer.
Next, head to the farmers and markets: the largest market in the Abondance Valley is brimming with local cheeses, cured meats, fresh fish from Lake Geneva, fruits and vegetables, flowers, and crafts. Everything you need to put together a sumptuous platter for your evenings by the fire. Fall is undoubtedly the best time to savor the region’s bounty in all its richness, up close with the people who bring it to life.
The Joys of the Woods
Mushrooms and seasonal delights
Fall is also a time for exploring the forest floor and foraging. The forests of Chablais are ideal for mushroom hunting, provided you follow local rules—such as permitted quantities and protected areas. It’s a fun, social activity that invites you to explore the forest in a different way, with your nose to the ground and your senses on high alert.
Be sure to check with the tourist office, and if in doubt, always have your harvest inspected before eating it. It’s a fall tradition that’ s as fun as it is delicious— and one that’s best enjoyed into the evening, when you cook your harvest at the chalet.
Slow down—really
Time to recharge
Fall is the perfect time to take a breather. Contemplative hikes, reading by the fire, delicious local cuisine: we really take our time. Far from the hustle and bustle, the days regain a soothing rhythm, perfect for both rest and reconnecting with oneself.
And to extend your relaxation, the Forme d’O aquatic center, located in the heart of the village, welcomes you year-round with its sports, relaxation, and wellness areas. The mountains, quite simply, on a human scale.
A Low-Key Season
Good to Know Before You Go
To be completely transparent: fall is an off-season. After summer activities wind down around early September and before the ski area opens in mid-December, some ski lifts, shops, and restaurants operate at reduced capacity or close for a few weeks.
That’s exactly what makes it so charming—a village left to its own devices. But we recommend checking opening hours with the Tourist Office before you go, so you can plan your stay as best as possible and avoid any unpleasant surprises. It’s a season to savor, then, as long as you do a little planning beforehand.
