Châtel in the Summer: The Great Outdoors in Haute-Savoie

Châtel · Portes du Soleil

A Thousand Ideas, Twelve Desires

Another Side

When the mountain turns green

When the snow melts, Châtel trades its white coat for a lush green landscape and reveals a whole new side of itself. From June through September, the village comes to life in soft light, nestled among flower-filled alpine meadows, deep forests, and mountain peaks silhouetted against the sky.

It’s a peaceful, bountiful mountain where the air smells of freshly cut grass and resin, and where time seems to slow down to a more human pace. Far from the hustle and bustle of the seaside resorts, here you can experience the authentic charm of a sun-drenched mountain village. Want to come along?

The Spirit of the Great Outdoors

Nature as far as the eye can see

In the summer, Châtel really comes into its own. Trails stretch as far as the eye can see, ridges reveal vast horizons, and every path promises its own reward. From the Col de Bassachaux, the view takes in the Portes du Soleil ski area, Mont de Grange, Mont Blanc, the Dents du Midi, and Lake Montriond— a panorama that alone makes it worth lacing up your hiking boots.

Here, nature isn’t just a backdrop—it’s the experience itself. We walk for the sheer joy of breathing, we stop to listen to the silence, and we look up to follow the flight of a bird of prey. The mountains in summer have that unforgettable scent of freedom—the scent of wide-open spaces where we feel both tiny and fully alive.

The Village's Gem

Lake Vonnes, the peaceful heart of Châtel

Located in the heart of the village, Lake Vonnes is a true oasis of coolness. People come here to stroll, have a picnic by the water, or simply enjoy the view of Mont de Grange, Mont Chauffé, and the Cornettes de Bise. Its surroundings, which were completely renovated in 2024, make it an ideal place for a walk for people of all ages.

It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful end to the day, when the light turns the mountain peaks golden and the village slows down. One of those simple places where you take your time— places that, on their own, capture the spirit of Châtel in the summer: beauty within reach, without any pretense.

A Land of Cycling

The mountain biking soul of Châtel

If there’s one thing that brings Châtel to life in the summer, it’s biking. The resort has established itself as a top destination for mountain bikers, and throughout the season you’ll come across enthusiasts who’ve come to race down the slopes or explore the high-altitude trails. This cycling culture is part of the village’s identity and contributes to its lively, sporty atmosphere as soon as the warm weather arrives.

You can feel this energy everywhere— from the chairlifts carrying bikes to the outdoor cafes where people relive the day’s descents. A friendly and laid-back atmosphere that sets the tone for summer in Châtel.

A Vibrant Village

The atmosphere and the highlights

Summer in Châtel is also a time of great excitement. The village comes alive with major events that mark the season, from early-summer mountain bike races to summer festivities, not to mention the traditional July 14th show at Lake Vonnes, followed by a dance on the church square.

These moments give the village a festive and warm atmosphere, where locals and vacationers mingle in a friendly, good-natured setting. It is this authentic and welcoming local life that makes people grow attached to Châtel—far beyond its scenic beauty.
